Chapter 4

Elizabeth H. Crall Travels – Yellowstone 1967

Wednesday, August 31, 1967 — We left the Cleveland airport early and flew to Chicago, Salt Lake City, and West Yellowstone where we rented an Avis car and drove to Ennis, Montana.  We drove through the earthquake (’59) area and saw the tremendous rock slides and the quake lake that it made.  We spent the night at El Western motel, a place recommended by Ralph Bauman, Doss Carrithers’ father.

Thursday, September 1 — Jim fished the Odell river and in the evening we went to Virginia City, a restored mining town of 100 years ago.  We had dinner and entertainment in the Wells Fargo Café.  The cabaret was provided by members of a summer stock company.

Friday, September 2 — We took our lunch up to Jack Creek campground which is about 13 miles up in the mountains.  We didn’t see another soul while we were there.

Saturday, September 3 — Today is very windy and cloudy.  We visited the fish hatchery in the morning and in the afternoon we took a float trip down the Madison river.  Our guide was Peter Christianson.  The trip was about four hours long and was very scenic.  The fishing was only moderately good.

Sunday, September 4 — We returned to fish the Odell.  I had no luck but Jim caught several.  In the afternoon we revisited Virginia City and Nevada City, fascinating ghost mining towns.

Monday, September 5 — We left Ennis for West Yellowstone and turned in our car for a camper.  It is adequate and with a few additions and adjustments we took off for Yellowstone Park, fishing along the way.  We camped in Canyon campground for the night.

Tuesday, September 6 — Today we continued into Yellowstone and found it as beautiful as ever.  It is off season and there are few visitors.  Jim is fishing Buffalo Ford but the trout aren’t biting very well.

Wednesday, September 7 — While I was reading in the camper, I looked up the road and a large black bear was coming towards the camper.  He reared up on his back legs and looked in the front window, then went around to the back door and rocked the camper.  He was used to getting fed!  I was scared!!  Tonight we are camped in Bay Bridge campground.

Thursday, September 8 — Drove to Grand Teton forest and park – beautiful mountains.  Just before leaving Yellowstone Park, we stopped in the Lewis River and Lewis Lake area.  Most beautiful.

Friday, September 9 — We spent the day in Grand Teton National Park.

Saturday, September 10 — We visited Jackson Lake Lodge and museum and strayed into the Colter Bay campground.  There was some rain and we stayed at Bay Bridge.

Sunday, September 11 — We spent the day in Madison Junction.
