Before dinner I took a taxi down the Reforma to the Maria Isabela, a new hotel near the Angel monument.  What a plushy place!  It is really beautiful with original Oroszcos on the walls.  I also visited an art gallery in the hotel.  Not much good stuff.  Back to the M.C. for dinner and early to bed.

We are staying at the Grand Hotel Villa Igiea and it is large, beautiful and on the edge of a beautiful bay.  The water is a real Mediterranean blue.  We have lovely rooms overlooking the bay but we don't have toothbrushes!  We had dinner at the Olympic restaurant

 Wednesday, August 31, 1967 -- We left the Cleveland airport early and flew to Chicago, Salt Lake City, and West Yellowstone where we rented an Avis car and drove to Ennis, Montana. 

One of the good things about travel is reminiscing about it later.  One tends to remember the excitement of new places and experiences and to forget the difficult parts. 

Thursday and Friday, January 6 and 7, 1972 -- I left Cleveland at 4:45 PM with neighbors Digby and Bill Hubbard for London, England.

It was once more adventure time for me when I left Ocean Reef, via the Upper Keys Transportation Service, for the Miami airport to catch a 1: 30 PM flight for Port Of Spain, Trinidad. 

This is about our experiences in the hurricane that hit south Florida on Monday, August 24, 1992.

So how did I come to write this wandering, loosely-organized tale of family history?  Friends and relatives weren't clamoring for it. 

 I was born on March 2, 1945, as the Allies fought their way across Germany towards the Rhine on their way to Berlin, and American forces bombarded the Ryukyu islands in the Pacific.

In the fall of 1963, it was time to head east to New Haven and get my freshman year of college started. My parents drove me, along with one suitcase and my beloved portable Olivetti typewriter.

It was a long, strange trip. The transition from the US to Libya, from Bisbee training to Tripoli, then to Benghazi and finally to our assignment in Qaminis was all a blur: airports, no sleep, standing in line, terrifying bus rides

The first portion of our Thailand 30 training program took place on the Hilo campus of the University of Hawaii on the Big Island.

 We didn't mind that Chiang Rai lacked the excitement and culture of bigger cities and that it really wasn't much more than a large market town.

We were facing the last teaching cycle of our Peace Corps experience and had come to terms with a return to the States after this final year.

For some reason, Cleveland Heights felt like the place where we should start our new life in America. Gates Mills was way too expensive and we had no connection to any other city. Plus, Royse's mother lived in Cleveland Heights, so that put family nearby.

THURSDAY, JUNE 26 I was taking the kids on their first trip to Europe, so it was a big deal, kind of a right of passage. I myself hadn't been there for over twenty five years and I was afraid that perhaps my foreign travel skills had gotten irredeemably rusty.
